"Everywhere is walking distance, if you have the time."
- STEVEN WRIGHT
Dear Potential Sponsor,
I've been told that “Everyday you're supposed to do something that challenges you.” I'm living up to that belief by committing to walk my first hike marathon as a member of Team Diabetes Canada in Ireland. By September 1st 2018, I need to raise $7,500 for the Canadian Diabetes Association.
I'm nervous! Physically, this will be my greatest challenge to date. By participating in this event, I hope I can encourage others to get active and prevent Diabetes in their own lives.
Before I understood what Diabetes really was, I had seen it's devastating effects first-hand. My Aunt Anne had Type 1 Diabetes, and I witnessed her daily routine with her Insulin. When I was a child, I remember her showing me how she tested her blood. She passed away a few years ago, too soon in life as a result of complications with her Diabetes and health habits.
Making a difference in the lives of those affected by diabetes is a priority for me. Diabetes has reached epidemic proportions in Canada. Currently, more than 11 million Canadians, or one in three, are living with diabetes or prediabetes. In most cases, Type 2 Diabetes can be prevented or delayed through lifestyle modifications including diet and exercise. This is what I am striving for – I've been recently diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes and I am trying my best to gain control of it before it controls me.
I have some huge challenges ahead of me, but they are minor in comparison to the day-to-day struggles that children and adults have living with Type 1, and Type 2 Diabetes. I'm hiking to help prevent my Type 2, raise awareness, assist to find a cure for Type 1, and in Memory of my Aunt Anne.
I am counting on your support to help me reach my goal.
In return, I will:
Train to walk up to 20km with monthly distance goals.
Hike a challenging 4-5 hour route.
Fundraise throughout the year to reach the $7,500 Goal.
Monetary Donations as well as Gift Donations for Draws & Events are extremely appreciated, and all proceeds go towards Research, Education, Advocacy and our Kids Camp for children with Type 1 Diabetes.
